What is a UTR and how do I get one?

A unique taxpayer reference (UTR) is assigned to each anyone who registers for self assessment tax (and other taxes as well). It links you to your tax records at HMRC.

Once your UTR is assigned, it stays with you forever.

Each UTR has 10 digits. It will appear on letters from HMRC, sometimes titled: "Our Ref" or "Tax Ref". You will also need to use it to pay HMRC - using your UTR followed by the letter K.

Registering for a UTR

The main reason Earnr users will need to register for a UTR is if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year from self employment or property income.

Contact us if you need to register for a UTR.

The process can take several weeks, and we may need to ask you for more information especially if it does not match HMRC records.

Checking a UTR format

This checker will confirm if your UTR is of the right format.
